Why Is My Heat Pump Not Cooling on Hot Days?

A heat pump often won’t cool on hot days because airflow or heat transfer is restricted. The most common trigger is a clogged filter or dirty outdoor coil, which makes the system overheat and cut cooling capacity. Low refrigerant, a weak capacitor, or a thermostat/defrost control fault can also reduce output. On extreme heat, a grimy outdoor coil can spike pressure and the unit will protect itself by throttling. Our team routinely sees this pattern around West Columbia during midsummer heat waves. After a quick diagnosis, we repair what’s needed; true component failures may justify a 24/7 visit.

Check for these quick signs:

 • Ice on the coil
 • Weak airflow or rooms not cooling
 • New grinding or buzzing noises

If you see ice, switch the system off and let it thaw before restarting.
Updated: 2026-04-01
Need help in West Columbia, SC? Call (803) 888-4115 or book online. “Rusty stuck with it, found the problem, and now I have AC again!” — Linda D.
